Straw Bale Workshop Construction Experience

with Bill and Athena Steen of the Canelo Project in Arizona

Mary Rosa Residence #1

This is my first workshop experience. The group was filled with enthusiasm and energy. It smelled and felt good and was pleasing to the touch.

Bike Shed

With no frost depth, we experimented with foundations of rammed earth and dry set stone. The bales are laid on edge and tied down to the foundation with baling twine. Two parallel walls with only a roof connection should be easy to push over, but is very stable.

Rain Chain Building

We left openings for future doors and windows. The broad overhanging roofs are intended to keep the rain off. The corrugated roof panels were aged to take away the shine.

The second casita for Mary's straw bale compound is similar to the first, a small load bearing structure with earthen plaster.

Built in two weeks with volunteer labor for $500, Alma has a house that is warm in winter and cool in summer. Her other home was metal siding with no insulation and it reaches 120 degrees in the summer.
